Do you know how to converse with trade show attendees in Tempe? More importantly, does your staff know how to get a conversation started – and how to keep it going? Do you ever wonder how many great opportunities are lost simply because the conversation never really gets off the ground?

Be Confident in Your Display

It starts with excellent trade show graphics. Tempe exhibitors must know beyond a doubt that they are holding their own at the trade show. You want to be confident that your display is in keeping with the current trends, the graphics are crisp and attractive, the banner stands are properly set up, and the attention getters are doing their jobs. When you have full confidence in your hardware, it is a lot easier to converse with those who are going over your display with a critical eye or are approaching it with an interested attitude.

Bring the Right Staff

Assuming that you will have help on expo day, bring along your outgoing staff members. This is not the venue for the brooding (although highly qualified) or socially awkward (although a genius at customer care) staff member. Rather, you want to bring the folks who are naturals at shaking hands, starting conversations and who bring the knowledge to the table that allows them to direct the conversation to the business at hand.

Planning for the Conversations

But what happens if the socially awkward or painfully shy business professional is you, and there are no staff members to help? You still have a chance!

  • Plan and practice a number of openers. Practice in front of a mirror. Repeat the phrases until they are second nature and do not sound odd or scripted any longer.
  • Prepare for negative reactions. Some attendees may not take an instant liking to some of your openers. Simply move on to the next, and make a mental note to avoid the other opener.
  • Ask attendees for an opinion. Sure, you are selling your company’s product or service, but get the attendee to talk simply by asking for an opinion on something.
  • Enlist help. If you are doing hands-on demonstrations of your products, go ahead and ask an attendee to lend you a hand. This is a great way to start a rapport.
  • Discuss the show. When all else fails, simply ask the attendee’s opinion on the trade show. You are both there because you are interested in the theme of the show, which gives you the common ground needed to talk about the expo, its turnout and the various displays. From there, it is much more natural to transition into your display’s importance.
