When our team assists clients with designing a monument sign, one size never fits all. We customize all elements, from the sign’s overall size to font display and message. Let’s take another look at effective monument sign design.

What Goes Into The Design Of A Monument Sign

Size Matters

When you consider adding a monument to your exterior signage setup, its size is critical. The goal is to have it so large that drivers approaching your location have no problem reading the information from way down the road. At the same time, it cannot be so large as to upset the spatial proportions of your property. We resolve this issue by visiting your location for a site survey, which allows us to take measurements and gauge the speed of traffic in front of your locations. The latter is critical for determining the lettering size.

Dimensional Lettering Makes the Font Pop

Monument sign design is one of the times where less lettering can be more. Add too much information, and the letters have to be smaller and, therefore, more difficult to read from a distance. Opt for an ornate font, and even in the absence of too much lettering, the sign will be difficult to read from a distance. Our clients have had excellent success with easy-to-read fonts that are bolded and large. We recommend adding a three-dimensional element to the letters versus a flat print whenever possible.

Monument Sign vs. Pylon Sign

As a general rule of thumb, a pylon sign addresses drivers that are farther away than a standard monument sign design allows. Both are freestanding signs. A monument sign, typically shorter and placed at eye height, is ideal for a business visible from the road. In contrast, a pylon works well for a company that is trying to get attention while being difficult to locate from the street. Pylons also work well for companies near highways and shopping centers that want to display the names of their tenants.

Monument or Pylon Sign Refurbishing? We Do That!

If you already have a monument or pylon sign on your property, consider refurbishing it rather than replacing it. Doing so saves you money and minimizes the need for construction in front of your business. Our team will gladly visit your location and take a close look at the signage. If the structure is in good shape, a fresh coat of paint and new lettering may be all you need.
