The last time Northrop Grumman’s Minotaur IV took off, STP-S29A (Space Test Program-S29A) delivered a payload into the lower Earth orbit. While fans can view all the details of the April 7th launch online, they can also see the successful rocket and get a close look at its decals. Do you ever wonder who does this kind of work?

Rocket Decals

The Spotlight Signs and Imagining Solutions Team Makes Its Contribution to the United States Space Force (USSF)

We have the answer. Our sign shop was honored to work with Northrop Grumman to design, fabricate, and install the decals for the rocket’s side. It is not every day that a sign company has an opportunity to see its products head into space. However, it proved that our decals are not just excellent for use down on Earth but also in space.

Designing and Fabricating Decals That Withstand the Elements

Extreme weather includes anything from desert heat to wind abrasion, salt, and extreme UV exposure. How does our team design and fabricate these products for clients?

  • Material. To make durable decals, you need the right materials. Cast vinyl is always a good option because it expands and contracts with temperature changes, but does not shrink. While we can also use calendared vinyl, this material may prove too rigid and thick to handle weather extremes.
  • Laminate. Depending on your use of the decals, we may add over-laminates with UV inhibitors to prevent color fading and material failure. Other types of laminates are ideal for decals that may become damaged by fuel, sand, or scratches during daily use. If you display your decals in areas where graffiti is an issue, we can also add an anti-graffiti coating.
  • Adhesive. In addition to selecting the best material for the job, there are special considerations when choosing an adhesive. Our technicians prefer high-tack adhesives for textured surfaces. Otherwise, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesives are good options. They prevent moisture from invading the space between the decal and the object; they will stay in place even when the cast vinyl contracts and expands.

Decals for Rockets

Let’s Look at Some Real-World Applications for Strong Decals

When we worked with ASR Construction in Mesa, the client requested custom vehicle decals for equipment used at the company’s various sites. These decals must withstand scratches and damage from materials at these locations. We also design, produce, and install boat decals for hobbyists around Carefree’s Bartlett Lake. These are typically for private clients looking to stand out at the marina.

Of course, so far, the most extreme set of decals went to Northrop Grumman’s Minotaur IV. But if you need them for anything else, we are most certainly able to accommodate you. Call us today to learn more about your options!
