After investing in vinyl window film treatments, most of our clients are wondering how to take care of the looks of the product. Because we use only top-quality vinyl for the projects we take on, you know that you’ll receive a durable product. That said, there is a right way and a wrong way on how to clean etched or frosted window graphics.

Before we applied the product, we ensured that your glass surfaces were spotless and free of any oily residue. It is fair to say that the glass panels were as clean as the day they came from the factory. Next, we installed the vinyl according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

That said, there is a curing time involved in the process. When we left your venue that day, the curing process had just started. This might give the etched vinyl a slightly cloudy appearance. This is okay. Over the next seven to ten days, the curing process continues. When it is finished, you will no longer see any cloudiness.

Even so, resist the temptation to clean your windows for at least 30 days. If you have a service that handles your windows, tell them to stay away for a month. It allows the edges of the vinyl to bond correctly.

How Not to Clean Your Treated Windows

There are several mistakes that we see clients make with their treated windows.

  • Abrasive products. Please do not use the cheap paper towels that crinkle when you use them. Also, stay away from newspaper, sponges with coarse sides, and wool rags.
  • Ammonia. If your window-cleaning product contains ammonia, do not use it on the treated panes. The ammonia reacts with the adhesive, which can cause edges to loosen over time. The result is not an attractive look. Besides that, it could lead to a yellowing of the material.
  • Home-made cleaners. Avoid the lemon concentrate, baking soda paste, or commercial-strength vinegar.

Loosen dirt or detritus with a feather duster. Next, use a spray cleaner for glass that does not contain ammonia. Wipe it away with a soft paper towel or regular lint-free cloth. That is all. You do not need any specialty cleaner or other things. Most importantly, you do not need to expend a lot of hard work. Simply clean your windows as you usually do.

We always recommend drying around the edges of the windows most carefully. If you keep moisture sitting there, it can interfere with the corners of the vinyl. This is true even if you use standard window cleaner. Therefore, we always urge clients to dry these areas well after cleaning.

If you use a window cleaning service, be sure to ask them to do so as well. If you are not sure that they will accommodate you, follow up their cleaning with a quick swipe with the soft paper towel.

Follow these tips, and your window vinyl will remain looking like new for a long time to come. For more tips on how to maintain your signage solutions, contact our shop today!
