Several years ago, our shop worked with Atlantica Yield, a rebranding of Abengoa Yield Plc. At that time, the client chose a 3D letter lobby sign and selected Gatorfoam for the material. Our team cut the letter and style elements from one-inch-thick Gatorboard and applied back-painted matte acrylic faces to the letters’ surfaces.
When the client contacted us this year, they needed a new lobby sign. Because they liked the previous product so much, they requested that we would use the same specs. However, there is one exception. Instead of a matte finish, we would use a polished finish for the acrylic. It results in an elegant addition to an evolving brand story.
What Makes a Gatorboard Sign so Popular?
The client spent several years with the 3D Gatorfoam letters our shop previously produced and installed. They saw it age but maintain its shape and color integrity. Moreover, the client was impressed by the ability to fully customize the signage display using the material. It made sense to repurchase it.
Of course, there is more to Gatorfoam’s popularity. The material itself consists of an extruded polystyrene foam reinforced with a veneer comprised of wood fiber and a flame-retardent, organic-based compound. The resulting product is strong, waterproof, and suitable for cutting, shaping, painting, and adding laminates.
You can use Gatorfoam for a wide variety of interior signs. Examples include lobby signs, point-of-purchase signage, wayfinding setup, and more. Besides functional signage, we can also use the material to create brand-supporting artwork for your office or store.
Taking Advantage of Polished versus Matte Finishes
A matte finish is ideal when the sign is located in an area where natural or artificial lighting consistently illuminates it. There will be no glare, which allows the color palette to be clearly visible. However, a glossy finish is a fantastic idea for a space where there will be only partial illumination. The reflection of some light generates visual interest that catches visitors’ attention. Also, there could be a slight shift in branding that you can express simply with the change from a matte to a glossy finish.
3D Lobby Sign or Logo Board?
Both sign designs are excellent. However, sometimes, one will serve you better than another.
- Wall space. If the focal wall for the lobby sign installation has challenges, a board can help to contain the letters, while individual 3D elements will allow the message to spread a little. Frequently, clients with large walls prefer the letters.
- Logo shape. Is the shape of the logo an integral part of your corporate persona? A logo board could be a better choice. Our technicians cut it to meet the design requirement. By the way, we can add 3D letters to a logo board as a way to give you the best of both worlds.
- Finish. Mixed media displays typically look better in 3D letter displays. These include gradient color changes or laminates.
