Types Of Channel Letter Signs

What are Channel Letters?

Channel letters are a popular type of signage for outdoor advertising and branding. We typically make these three-dimensional letters from metal, plastic, or a combination of materials. Clients mostly request illuminated types. You can differentiate between the various types of channel letters based on their design, illumination method, and construction.

Different Types Of Channel Letters

The Three Custom Channel Letter Signs You Probably Know

  1. Front-lit. In this type, the face of the channel letter is made from a translucent material like acrylic. It is illuminated from the front using internal LED lighting elements. The light shines through the front of the letter, creating a vibrant and eye-catching effect. It is an excellent way of featuring your brand’s colors.
  2. Reverse-lit. You may also hear them called back-lit or halo-lit. These letters are designed to create a backlighting effect. The letters are fabricated with an opaque face and sides, while the back is open to allow light to spill onto the mounting surface. They cast a halo or outline of light behind the letters when installed away from the surface.
  3. Front and back-lit channel letters. This type combines both front and reverse lighting effects. The face of the letter is illuminated from the front, while the back is also open to allow some light to cast a halo behind the letter. We use more LEDs for these custom channel letter signs.

Advanced Technology Channel Letters You May Not Have Heard Of

Among the different types of channel letters, the big three previously mentioned are the most common. The next group of design options is less commonly seen on building fronts. As a result, they make a significant visual impact.

  • Open face letters. We construct them similar to standard channel letters but leave an exposed face. They are often used to achieve a vintage or retro look. Faux neon tubing is commonly used for open-face channel letters to heighten this effect.
  • Trimless channel letters. In this design, the letters are installed without visible trim or borders. It results in a sleek and modern appearance. We mount trimless letters flush against the mounting surface to make the design pop.
  • Reverse pan letters. For this type of letter, we use a metal pan formed to the shape of the letter. The letter itself is attached to the inside of the pan. The lighting is often directed back into the pan, creating a halo effect around the letter.
